“PRRS Virus Vaccination Strategies and Efficacy” Dr. Locke Karriker

Dr. Karriker will review research on PRRSV vaccination strategies and efficacy in the growing pig and reproductive model. The focus will be on summarizing evidence of the impact of vaccination on wild-type infection and clinical disease.

“Review and Update on Influenza Virus and Implications to the Swine Industry”
Dr. Rodger Main
Dr. Main will review the history of the emerging A/2009/H1N1 influenza virus and provide a timely update on the current status and implications of emerging influenza viruses on pork production.

 

“What We Know about Feeding Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) to Swine”
Dr. Jerry Shurson

This presentation will focus on the current state of knowledge related to feeding DDGS to swine in all phases of production.  Managing nutrient composition variability among sources, maximum recommended inclusion rates, effects of reproductive and growth performance, carcass and pork quality will be addressed along with impacts on ileitis and gut health.  Current issues and concerns related to antimicrobial residues, mycotoxin risk, and handling issues will also be discussed.

 

“Pork Quality Assurance Plus® and its Effect on Swine Welfare and Production”
Dr. Alan Snodgrass

This talk will review the various aspects of the Pork Quality Assurance Plus® (PQA Plus®) program and what is involved in training and certification.  Points will be discussed with regard to PQA Plus® and how it impacts animal welfare and animal health.

 

“CSF — The Differential We Can't Afford to Forget”
Dr. Harry Snelson

The AASV received a grant from USDA as part of a cooperative agreement with Iowa State University and the National Pork Board to develop and distribute educational materials to veterinarians and veterinary students informing them about Classical Swine Fever (CSF) and USDA’s on-going CSF surveillance program.  Part of that effort involved the production of an educational video. The video was produced in 3-D and immerses the viewer in a real-life scenario involving the introduction of CSF into a typical swine herd and the subsequent implications.

 

“How can we use behavioral measures to assess swine well-being?”      
Dr. Anna Johnson

Dr. Johnson will discuss various means of measuring animal comfort as an objective means assessing welfare of swine.  She will also present information on the historical perspective of animal welfare and stakeholders in animal welfare.

 

“Pen Gestation in Large Facilities”
Dr. Doug Groth

Dr. Groth will discuss the experiences of his clients’ with gestation pens in large farrowing operations.  Management strategies on maintaining sow body condition and health will be a main focus of the presentation.  Additionally, reproductive performance data and assessment of sow comfort will be presented.
